The first trumpets were used many years ago in Africa and Australia and were used for religious ceremonies. There is not an exact date that these trumpets were created, but the they were made out of hollowed out sticks or horns and tusks of animals, and were very different from the trumpets that are used today.
Trumpets were also found in tombs of Ancient Egypt . They were made out of bronze or silver and used for battles. Other cultures such as Romans, Greeks, Israelite's, and Celts had horns that were used in battle and for religious reasons,
but then they were not considered musical instruments.
At around 1095-1270 A.D Europe came in contact with these cultures. This is most likely when Europe discovered trumpets and then started making trumpets with sheets of metal.
During the 18th and 19th century many tried to find a way to change the trumpet so it would be able to play the chromatically. In 1750 the solution was for the player's hand to be placed in the bell. Then, in 1777 the bell was curved to make it easier for the player's hand to reach. In 1788 the first attempt to use valves on the trumpet was made, as it was the only good solution for the trumpet to play chromatically. In 1839 that the piston valve trumpet was created by Francois Périnet, which is the most commonly used trumpet today.
In the 20th century Jazz gained popularity. The trumpet can play loud solos in Jazz, so it was needed and it played a very important role.
