Making Your First Sound
Making your first sound on the trumpet can be more difficult than it seems so be sure to not get discouraged and try your best! The first thing you want to do is practice making a buzzing sound with your lips. Do this by blowing air through your lips creating a buzzing sound and make sure your cheeks aren't puffed out. Now do the same thing again, but this time into your mouth piece to create a buzzing sound. Once you feel comfortable with buzzing into your mouthpiece and are getting a consistent sound put your mouthpiece into the body of your trumpet (see "How to Set up") and make the same buzzing sound. Don't worry about getting the volume and pitch perfect the first time, and also don't be afraid to blow a lot of air through either, as you may have to at first to make a sound. |
The First Notes on the Trumpet
The first thing you will need to know before you play your first notes are the valve numbers. The first valve (valve 1) is the valve that is closest to the player, the second valve (valve 2) is in the middle and the third valve (valve 3) is the one furthest away from the player, as seen in the diagram below.
